Who Am I?

Thanks for stopping by this tiny little slice of the internet. Seeing you have taken the time to visit, I thought it might be prudent to tell you a little bit about myself and why I am here. My name is Joe and I happen to be an accountant. Maybe you are too. If so, I hope you plan to stick around for awhile.

Where I Have Come From

Over the past couple of decades, I have worked for a wide variety of companies. I have worked for small companies. I have worked for a large company. I have worked for publicly traded companies and I have worked for family businesses. I’ve also done some time with a startup. I have been fortunate in that I have seen a large slice of what corporate America has to offer. The good, the bad, the ugly. As an accountant, I know what it feels like to be an accountant in all of these types of companies. I know the struggles we face. The challenges we are asked to meet.

I also know, more than anything else, what it feels like to be essentially a “cost of doing business”. Companies have accountants because they “have to”. The banks what financial statements. Wall Street needs their numbers. On the other hand, every business “needs” salespeople. They “need” operations folks. They make the business grow, right?

What I Learned

What I have learned, however, is that every business NEEDS an accountant as well to grow the business. Yes, believe it or not. What has become my passion is proving that very thing. I’ve made it a crusade of sorts to prove that.

I don’t view myself as a “cost of doing business”. Why? Because I know what happens to “costs of doing business”. They get outsourced. They get auctioned out to the lowest bid. They get “streamlined.” What I know more than anything else in my professional life is that we, as accountants, bring something unique to the table. Something that can’t be outsourced or mashed together in the latest slick software package.

We offer perspective. We can look at the business that provides us a paycheck in a different vein. Non-accountants traditionally struggle with “the numbers”. That’s my gift. I view my career purpose as that of a bridge between the past (historical financials) and the future (planning and forecasting).

I have spent much time trying to learn ways to make myself more valuable to the business I am working for. There are many ways to do this. I hope to share those with you through this site. What I have learned over the past few years is there are essentially two camps of accountants. Those who do things the way they are always done. And those who want to do things different. I have made an effort to be part of the second camp.

Why?

Because is it who I am. The key to success, in my mind, for a career is to make a difference. It is no secret that accountants feel like second class citizens within a company. I personally, do not want to feel like that. I want to be valued and I want to be part of the decision making process. I don’t want to be a “cost of doing business”. It is that simple. Add value. Be Valued. I hope to share some of the ways I have learned to do that here at Business Accounting Mastery.

I also hope to learn from YOU how you have learned how to do this yourself. The fact you are still reading this tells me you hope to be more valued in your organization as well. Hopefully, we can make this journey together and bring more value to the role of an accountant in an organization. There are great viewpoints, strategies, and techniques floating around out there and I have made it my quest to seek them out. That is the beauty of the internet these days. Points of view previously buried or isolated can be easily sought out and shown the light of day in this day and age. This is just my small outpost designed to bring some of those thoughts together.
