A Little Something About You

In my last post, I told you little bit about myself.  Why I wanted to be something a little bigger than “just an accountant”.  Why I wanted to share a thing or two with you as fellow accountants.  So, who are you?  Kind of an odd question, as we don’t really know anything about each other. However, here’s a few things I THINK I know about you.  At least I believe that is the case if you happen to end up sticking around here a bit.

  • You are passionate about your role  You don’t just “punch the clock” so to speak.  You care.  You may have some minor (or even MAJOR) misgivings about your role and how you fit into the big picture.  But, you care enough to keep coming back.  You care enough to not pass your days playing solitaire.

  • You want to be more   As I said in my previous post, accountants are often pigeonholed into that “cost of doing business” category.  We are, at the very least, capable of being more.  We yearn to be “at the table” when the big decisions are made.  We have a unique gift as we can see the numbers in a different vein.  Other decision makers often struggle with the numbers, but we can help.

  • You are feeling overwhelmed  Being a successful professional  Being a husband or wife.  Being a good parent.  Being a good child or friend.  You have many, many competing interests and responsibilities in your life.  However, being a professional is the one that “brings home the bacon”.  You want to excel at what you do, but not at the expense of the other things that are important to you.  But, how?

  • You are open to change  You might not know exactly how to put it into words, but you know there are better ways.  You can feel it in your bones.  Better ways to communicate with your peers and with management.  Better ways to organize your workflow.  Better ways to delegate.  Better ways to report results.  You know they are there.  And you are not afraid to look into them.  You might not know all the details or have all the answers.  But, you are more than willing to seek them out.

  • You are honest and have integrity  Above all, you have a burning desire and belief that things must be done right.  We are not here to cut corners.  We are here to do our jobs in a way that make us comfortable to come home and look our spouse and children in the eyes and tell them we did something worthwhile today.  Accounting and financial management are tools that can be dangerous if used incorrectly and downright destructive (Enron, anyone?) if used without integrity.  You believe in using them properly.

So, you see?  I do know a little something about you.  Not coincidentally, we are alike in these ways.  That is why Business Accounting Mastery exists.  I want to be sure to spread this mindset through accountants everywhere.

Have I forgotton anything?  What else should I, and accountants everywhere, know about you?
